Common Skin Care Myths Debunked

Most people know that good skin care means washing your face and ridding it of excess dirt and oil. But the problem is people are actually stripping their skin of its essential oils. With thousands of skincare products and treatments available, it’s easy to believe quality skin care comes in a bottle. The right way to clean your face is to use a gentle, soap-free cleanser that’s effective at removing dirt, excess oil and makeup but won’t rob skin of moisture.

You’re not just born with great skin. Having a flawless complexion has more to do with how you treat your skin than having good genes. Dermatologists and skincare specialists still recommend drinking lots of water and maintaining a balanced lifestyle for healthy skin. But we believe skincare myths that prevent us from really getting the gorgeous skin we want.

Skin Myth #1: Chocolates makes break out- Nothing you eat causes acne. Some people think that they absorb the oils from greasy or rich foods and somehow secrete them out of their skin glands, but thats not true. Acne is caused when a gland sheds cells that stick together, plug the gland, hack up the oil and blow up the skin. High levels of stress, which can make people gravitate to fast and fatty cheeseburgers and milkshakes, hence the connection and high levels of the same stuff that makes you worry.

Skin Myth #2: Wrinkles are a result of dry skin- Today’s anti-winkle serums, moisturizers and topical treatments tout the benefits of aloe, shea butter, and other ingredients that moisturize and protect dry skin, but there is no evidence that wrinkles are actually a result of dry skin. Wrinkles are caused by a number of factors including sun damage, smoking, and the aging process and very little can be done with over the topical treatments.

Skin Myth #3: All natural mineral makeup is the best choice- Cosmetic companies are now touting the benefits of ‘all-natural’ makeup, claiming that botanicals and plant extracts are the key to healthy skin. However, many of these brands still contain a significant amount of chemicals and additives that have similar properties and benefits as standard brands.

Skin Myth #4: You need a separate sunscreen and moisturizer- Sunscreens already add moisture to your skin because of their ingredients. So if you have oily skin, you may want to skip the separate moisturizer. For those who prefer to wear both products, apply the moisturizer first and then apply the sunscreen. Either way, be sure to wear sunscreen daily. Using sunscreen is just one way to protect the skin, but limiting sun exposure time and wearing light-colored clothing can also reduce many health risks associated with tanning.

Skin Myth #4: Chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing procedures are one-time treatment- While some these treatments can improve the skin after just one session, most require ongoing visits for maximum results. Both types of facial rejuvenation procedures accelerate cell turnover so that your skin naturally starts to renew itself and generates fresh new cells. You can expect dramatic results after at least 2-3 treatments.

Bad things happen to good skin, but not always for the reasons you suspect. So taking good care of your skin we’ve busted these five myths, read on for the real scoop on your skin.
