Teenage Plastic Surgery to be banned Under Proposed Laws
TEENAGERS face bans on Botox, collagen injections and vanity plastic
surgery under proposed laws aimed at reining in the growing cosmetic
surgery industry. New regulations would make it more difficult for
people under 18 to have purely cosmetic procedures. This comes after
concerns were raised over Big Brother contestant Krystal
Forscutt, 20, promoting her breast-enhancement surgery. The proposals
also follow instances of people as young as 15 going to clinics and
requesting "Jessica Simpson" noses, breast implants, liposuction and
Botox and collagen injections.
A spokesman for Health Minister Bronwyn Pike said that yesterday
Victoria would consider adopting tough new measures. It is proposed
teenagers must have a referral from a GP before seeing a plastic
surgeon — and must also have counselling. Surgeons would require
parents’ consent and would be forced to offer a one-month cooling-off
period before a procedure. Victoria’s Health Services Commissioner,
Beth Wilson, said patients were being put at risk by unqualified
general practitioners performing cosmetic surgery.
