Studies Associate Cosmetic Surgery to Increase Chances of Depression and Suicides

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

Although a common belief associates cosmetic surgery to improve
self-esteem, there are recent studies that link cosmetic surgery to
depression related suicides. Individuals who go under the knife for an
improved physical appearance are increasingly obsessed about attaining
an attractive body. Cosmetic surgery procedures promise to deliver an
improved physique along with an increased self-esteem. Recent evidences
strongly suggest that people who undergo cosmetic surgery are more
likely to be suffering from psychiatric problems than an average
person. Studies also revel that mental health of the candidate is being
risked along with his physical well being when opting for a cosmetic
surgery.

Apart from severe depression cases suicides have been reported from
candidates who have had cosmetic treatment in near past. Cosmetic
surgery promises to invoke better feelings about personal esteem and
when such enhanced improvement is not perceived individuals are tempted
to commit suicide. Researches also mention that an high percentage of
people who undergo plastic surgery are taking drugs to treat a
psychiatric conditions, typically anti depressants.

Gifting Plastic Surgery Treatments is Gaining Popularity in America

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

More and more couples are considering plastic surgery as the
ultimate gift. However, The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic
Surgery (ASAPS) advises that it is important to weigh the risks and
benefits of any aesthetic procedure, as well as choosing the surgeon,
and setting that are right for you.

There are benefits to coming in for a consultation with a loved one,
but decisions about individual surgeries should only be made by the
person who is going to undergo the procedure. Additionally, couples who
are both undergoing procedures should time their surgeries so that the
other person can be available to care for their partner when they have
surgery.

"Couples that come in together for a consultation can learn about
all of the factors involved in elective surgery and can learn how to
care for each other during recovery. However, we need to remind people
that aesthetic surgery should never be given as a ’surprise gift,’"
said Julius Few, MD, Chair of the Public Education Committee for the
Aesthetic Society.

Cosmetic Surgery Should be Performed in a Doctor’s Clinic and Not in a Spa Setting

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

LOS ANGELES From shopping malls to beauty salons — medical spas,
touting everything from facials to face lifts, laser treatments to liposuction,
are popping up all over southern California. But the quest for beauty can leave
you scarred for life. Taking an in-depth look at some med-spas that are quite
literally playing with fire and it’s the clients who are getting burned.

"It makes me want to tear up, it’s depressing … It’s on my face, and I
see it all the time."
Like many women embarrassed by unwanted hair — Kimberly Lim went to a medical
spa located in a mall, hoping for a quick fix with laser hair removal. "It
was very clean looking, well organized. It looked very professional with the
nursing staff there," Lim says.

But what happened is anything but pretty. Experts warn — don’t be fooled by
aesthetics and exteriors. Cosmetic procedures like botox, laser therapies,
chemical peels, even skin resurfacing can be extremely dangerous if performed
in a spa setting and not in a doctor’s office.

Juvederm: Is the Latest Dermal Filler Made by Allergan

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

FDA has approved Juvederm as, safe dermal filler. The product is already widely used in U.S. Like Restylane, Juvederm also contains Hyaluronic acid. The manufacturers of Juvederm claim that this injection is better than other fillers currently available in market. The product has a smoother formulation that reduces discomfort and produces longer lasting and natural effects.

Juvederm acts as a miracle for filling wrinkles and is a type of transparent homogeneous visco-elastic gel. The solution has many benefits like it is of non-animal origin and does not require any preliminary test. It allows immediate effects and undergoing a touch up after few weeks helps the results to last longer. Effectiveness and lasting of result depends on the types of skin, body part where it is injected, amount injected and the injection technique. The average effect of juverderm lasts for around 6 months on the lips, as the movement of the lips is high.

Restylane has many Advantages over other Available Cosmetic Fillers

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Restylane is made up of Hyaluronic acid that is also naturally found in our bodies. Hyaluronic acid provides fullness and volume naturally to the skin. It lasts longer in the body as it uses body’s own moisture to maintain the filler properties. There is almost no downtime required for Restylane injections and the patient can resume his normal routine work just after the treatment. It is used to treat wrinkles, folds and skin lines.

This chemical is a biodegradable gel and has an ability to bind water up to 1000 times its volume. Its water retaining capacity makes it ideal as a filler agent as even when Hyaluronic acid is degraded in our body Restylane attracts more water from the body maintaining the youthful appearance. A healthier looking skin is achieved after the application of this filler agent. Apart from this popular injectable other fillers like Hylaform, Captique and Juviderm are also available in the market to obtain desired results.

Using Silicone Gel for Lip Enhancement can be Dangerous

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

Silicone oil is being preferred by patients and plastic surgeons as
a dermal filler since it offers almost permanent results. Other fillers
such as Restylane and Juvederm have temporary effects and need to be
repeated more often to maintain results. Most of the patients who
undergo silicone gel injection have a successful treatment but in some
cases there might be problems. However it is very difficult to predict
which case could turn out to be a mistake and complications after the
treatment might erupt even after months or years of the injection.

There can be any serious or permanent complications arising out of
silicone injections in the lips. Problems such as asymmetry, migration
(silicone gel moving to another location) and granuolomas (a lumpy
immune reaction to the silicone implant by the body) might occur. Other
problems such as lip deformity due to excessive collagen formation.
Some serious problems can be in the form of necrosis (loss of lip
tissue) or silicone embolism (silicone getting into the blood vessels
and causing a blood clot).

Mesotherapy, Photofacial and Injectables Work as Combination Therapy with Thermage Treatments

Monday, December 18th, 2006

Optimal results are obtained when a Thermage procedure is combined
with other cosmetic treatments. Mesotherapy, Fotofacial and Injectables
like Botox or Restylane provides options for obtaining perfect results
through combination therapy. Thermage improves the general texture of
your skin. Fotofacial improves the effects of age and sun damage and
also smoothes broken capillaries and surface lines. Botox and Restylane
are used on targeted specific areas to rectify deeper lines and
wrinkles. Restylane works as filler that pumps folds and creases in the
skin.

An overall rejuvenation system is achieved when combining these
cosmetic procedures along with Thermage treatments. All the treatments
stated above are non-invasive processes that can be done at the same
visit during the Thermage therapy. Hence with minimal time investment
and virtually no downtime dramatic results can be obtained without
surgery.

Mesotherapy also acts as effective combination treatment when
performed on the face and body along with Thermage treatments. The
process works to melt away the fat lying under the skin.

The Thermage Process is Suitable for all Skin Tones Including Dark Skin Shades

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

For the Thermage treatment plan a tip called Therma Tip is used to deliver a controlled amount of Radio frequency energy to heat a large volume of collagen in deeper skin layers. There is a uniform heating for the deep structures while the outer layer is simultaneously protected with some cooling process. The new ThermaCool system that has been approved by FDA also allows tightening other body areas like skin laxity on the body, arms, thighs and abdomen.

The process does not require a long downtime. On the contrary a patient undergoing a Thermage procedure can return to work almost immediately. Hence the treatment is also nick named as a lunch time process. Following these benefits men are more attracted towards Thermage procedures. The improvement in the skin conditions is dramatic in vast majority of cases and that too without a surgery.

The process produces better results in minimum number of sessions than what is required by any other similar treatment plan. Another best part of this procedure is that it is suited to all skin types including tanned and dark skin.
